Finally the time has come to announce the second part of the Edition Unterfahrt, produced in cooperation with Enja Records. We managed to make an arrangement with pianist and hammond organ virtuoso Matthias Bublath, who has fascinated our audience with his thrilling performances and extraordinary compositions for many years. We’ve compiled the best of Unterfahrt Summerweek 2016’s recordings for the second of our Edition Unterfahrt’s CD-collection.

Matthias Bublath’s Munich Summer Jazz Week in August 2016 was a special affair of the heart: for the first time, two long-time members Takuya Kuroda and Zach Danziger from Bublath’s New York band met the Munich-based musicians Ferdinand Kirner and Tim Collins.
In the foreground are groovy and gripping pieces from the pen of Matthias Bublath, which are characterized by soul and funk. As usual in organ bands, the bass is taken over by the foot pedal of the Hammond B3. The tasteful use of Fender Rhodes piano and analog synthesizer gives the music another unusual shade. The band shines with enormous joy of playing and a freshness that gives the top-class soloists much room for improvisation.
Due to the very different and wide horizons of the five musicians, the funky and warm sound of the Hammond B3 organ is transferred to our present time.

Matthias Bublath is a pianist, organist and composer/arranger.
He has performed around the globe on festivals and events such as the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Kora Awards Johannesburg (South Africa) and The Kennedy Center Of The Performing Arts (Washington DC) to name a few. He has toured extensively in the US, Europe and Japan playing piano, organ and keys with his own group and a lot of different bands.
Being a versatile keyboardist he is also in full command of the Hammond B3 organ and performs regularly with his organ trio and a bassless funk quartet.
He has performed with Mike Clark Lionel Loueke, Bobby Sanabria, Frank Lacy, Candido Camero, Reuben Wilson and others.

Jazz trumpeter Takuya Kuroda is a forward-thinking musician with a bent toward mixing post-bop and adventurous soul-jazz. Born in Kobe, Japan, Kuroda moved to New York City and quickly ensconced himself in the vibrant jazz scene, performing with such artists as Junior Mance, Greg Tardy, Jose James, DJ Premier among others. In 2013, he signed with Blue Note Records, expanding upon his funk, fusion, and hip-hop-influenced sound. He has been working with Matthias Bublath for more than 12 years.

Zach Danzinger is on the cutting edge of today’s music and is one of the hottest players leading a new movement that has broad implications for modern drum set playing.
Emerging from the heart of New York’s experimental music scene, Zach has recorded in a wide variety of musical genres with such highly acclaimed musicians as Michel Camilo, Chuck Loeb, Randy Brecker, Leni Stern, Bob Mintzer, David Holmes, Jim Beard, Bill Evans, and Dave Fiuczynski. In addition, Zach has also achieved success scoring music for a number of major motion pictures including Oceans 11 and Oceans 12.

Ferdinand Kirner is one of the scene’s most sought-after guitarists for his sensitive, tasteful playing. He played among others with Max Herre, Joy Denalane and in the band of the casting show „The Voice of Germany“.

Tim Collins has been called a “world-class vibes player” (CJSR Canada), “a distinctive vibraphone voice” (Radio One Australia), a “musician of fire” (Washington Post) and “nothing less than exemplary” (Downbeat). His music has been described as “thoughtful, probing composition” (Downbeat), “universal and vibrant” (Blogcritics.org) and “stunning sophisticated jazz” (PBS Australia).
He has toured, performed and recorded with John Ellis, John Hollenbeck, Ralph Alessi, Nasheet Waits, George Porter Jr., Donny McCaslin, Ingrid Jensen, Antonio Sanchez and Charlie Hunter.
Tim is a native of Plattsburgh, New York and has resided in Munich, Germany since 2010
