Best known as the guitar player for "Space Guerilla" and "Jazzkantine", Tom Bennecke has started a new project that combines his musical passions -- reggae and jazz -- to form a fresh, new unit: Dub Guerilla. In the center of the music are three trombone players -- Nils Wogram, Uwe Granitza and Dr Ring Ding -- who act as a horn section as well as individual soloists. The three of them form a melodic counterpart versus the music's dub elements ("drum+bass+space"), then unite with these for extraterrestrian-like sound happenings. Nils Wogram, the leading jazz trombonist of his generation, and Uwe Granitza, an ex-sideman for Fury In The Slaughterhouse, Tom Jones, Phil Collins and others, are household names in the European jazz scene while Dr. Ring Ding has been an active part of the reggae world, mainly as a vocalist.
Bennecke clearly shows a deep affinity for old dub records from the likes of Lee Scratch Perry and King Tubby. He keeps deconstructing the instrumental tunes over and over again, thus building up a unique tension in his music. "Dub is the perfect form of expression for me," he says. "It offers everything I like: pushing riddims, simple melodies and also room for spacey and jazzy trips." Beside tracks that are produced with modern studio facilities and based on drum loops this album also includes pieces played by the band and radiating the magic of a great, cooperating rhythm group. A welcome presentation of Jazzkantine's Tom Bennecke as a leader, this music addresses the fans of dub/reggae as well as the jazz audience.

Tom Bennecke, der langjährige Gitarrist von Bands wie "Space Guerilla" und "Jazzkantine", hat ein neues Projekt ins Leben gerufen: Dub Guerilla. Es verschmilzt Elemente seiner beiden Leidenschaften -- Reggae und Jazz -- zu einer erfrischend neuen Einheit. Im Mittelpunkt des Geschehens stehen die drei Posaunisten: Nils Wogram, Uwe Granitza und Dr. Ring Ding. Mal als Satz, mal als Solisten bilden die drei das melodische Gleichgewicht zu den Dub-Elementen "Drum+Bass+Space", um sich dann mit ihnen zu vereinen -- für geradezu außerirdische Klangereignisse. Nils Wogram, der führende Jazzposaunist seiner Generation, und Uwe Granitza, bekannt als Begleiter von Phil Collins, Tom Jones, Fury In The Slaughterhouse u.a., sind anerkannte Größen der Jazzszene, während Dr. Ring Ding aus dem Reggae-Lager kommt, wo er vor allem als Vokalist hervorgetreten ist.
Unverkennbar ist Tom Benneckes Affinität zu den alten Dub-Platten von Leuten wie Lee Scratch Perry und King Tubby. Immer wieder aufs Neue dekonstruiert er seine Instrumentals und erzeugt so eine einzigartige Spannung. "Dub ist für mich eine ideale Ausdrucksform", sagt er. "Es ist alles drin, was ich liebe: druckvolle Riddims, naive Melodik und auch Platz für spacig-jazzige Abfahrten." Neben den modern produzierten, auf Drumloops basierenden Stücken gibt es auch echte Bandtracks, die das Spektrum des Albums durch die Magie einer großen Rhythmusgruppe bereichern. Diese Produktion ist sowohl für Dub/Reggae-Fans als auch für Freunde des Jazz ein Leckerbissen - und für die vielen Fans der "Jazzkantine" sowieso, die lange genug auf ein Solo-Album von Tom Bennecke gewartet haben.
