Every musician must one day free himself from role models and traditions if he wishes to cross the well known trodden paths. Pascal Schumacher does this in an emphatic, sensual way. He treads the difficult path of the inventive artist who does not succumb to the blessings of modern sound diversity and studio technology but weighs up and measures sounds, posing a challenge to and struggling with music. Strictly speaking he is more a purist than many other musicians who pay homage to the past. For what concerns him is his instrument, from which he wrests individuality without needing assistance from any heroes.
The vibraphone does not make things easy for him. Its sound is exotic, but is inflexible and historically re-stricted to entertainment and effects. Originally patented as a percussive device, it belongs to the family of percussion instruments and is often also seen as one possibility among a large number of drumming alterna-tives. A few legends have hitherto lent character to the instrument and enhanced its pedigree by a little swing, some bop, a pinch of modernity and a touch of salsa. And so one need no longer worry about the acceptance of the instrument, but there are only a handful of musicians who have left clear marks in the jazz world as composers, stylists and visionaries of the vibraphone.
For Pascal Schumacher this is a challenge. The young Luxembourg musician not only wishes to assert him-self in the mass of inconsistent reference systems; he also wants to send a signal. His musical mixture is distinctive, ranging stylistically from late Romantic to the new emphatic quality of the present. The sounds approach the discreet funkiness of the Fender Rhodes or the semblance of steel drums, play with an organ-like elegiac mood on the one hand and opulence increasing to a state of trance on the other. And they do not end with Pascal Schumacher�s instrument but build on the energy of the quartet, on the force of a reciprocal creative power.
The result is remarkable. Track by track, �Bang My Can� grows into an epic without words, juggling with struc-ture and resolution. Music comes into being which has an organic, down-to-earth and energetic effect. It is rooted in the present, plays with the past, with strength and with pathos, and is based on an approach char-acterized just as much by the chamber jazz of the eighties as by the rock sound of the nineties and the open-ness of the present. And so Pascal Schumacher is well on the way to becoming something out of the ordi-nary. He has an excellent team at his side, a compact, recognisable repertoire and his own idea of sound, and is serious enough not to lose his sense of humour in details � vibes with attitude, in step with the times. Jeder Musiker muss sich eines Tages von Vorbildern, Traditionen l�sen, wenn er den Schritt �ber die Grenze des Bekannten gehen will. Pascal Schumacher macht das auf nachdr�ckliche, lustvolle Weise. Er w�hlt den schwierigen Weg des aus selbst heraus schaffenden K�nstlers, der nicht den Segnungen der modernen Soundvielfalt und Studio-Technik erliegt, sondern Kl�nge abw�gt und gewichtet, Musik herausfordert und mit ihr k�mpft. Genau genommen ist er damit mehr Purist als mancher, der sich vor der Vergangenheit verneigt. Denn es geht ihm um sein Instrument, dem er Eigenwilliges abringt, ohne dabei die Hilfestellung der Heroen zu ben�tigen.
Das Vibraphon macht es ihm nicht leicht. Sein Sound ist zwar exotisch, gilt aber als wenig flexibel und historisch auf Unterhaltung und Effekt festgelegt. Patentiert als Schlagwerk geh�rt es zur Familie der Perkussionsinstrumente und wird h�ufig auch als eine M�glichkeit unter vielen trommelnden Alternativen wahrgenommen. Einige S�ulenheilige haben ihm bislang Charakter verliehen und ein wenig Swing, etwas Bop, eine Prise Moderne und einen Schuss Salsa ins Stammbuch geschrieben. So muss man sich keine Sorgen mehr �ber die Akzeptanz machen, findet aber auch nur eine Handvoll Musiker, die als Komponisten, Stilisten und Vision�re des Vibraphons klare Spuren in der Jazzwelt hinterlassen haben.
F�r Pascal Schumacher ist das eine Herausforderung. Der junge Luxemburger will sich im Gemenge der uneinheitlichen Bezugssysteme nicht nur behaupten, sondern Zeichen setzen. Seine musikalische Mischung ist markant, reicht stilistisch vom Sp�tromantischen bis zur neuen Emphatik der Gegenwart. Die Klangvorstellungen n�hern sich mal der dezenten Funkyness des Fender Rhodes, mal dem Anschein von Steeldrums, spielen mit orgelhaft Elegischem auf der einen Seite und trancehaft sich steigernder Tonopulenz auf der anderen. Und sie enden nicht bei Pascals Schumachers Instrument, sondern bauen auch auf die Energie des Quartetts, auf die Wucht einer sich erg�nzenden Gestaltungskraft.
Das Resultat ist beachtlich. Track f�r Track w�chst �Bang My Can� zu einem Epos ohne Worte heran, jong-liert mit Struktur und Aufl�sung. Musik entsteht, die organisch, geerdet und energisch wirkt. Sie ist in der Gegenwart verwurzelt, spielt mit der Vergangenheit, mit Kraft und Pathos und basiert auf einer Spielhaltung, die vom Kammerjazz der Achtziger ebenso gepr�gt ist wie vom Rocksound der Neunziger und der Offenheit der Gegenwart. Pascal Schumacher ist damit auf bestem Weg, aus dem Rahmen zu fallen. Er hat ein famo-ses Team an seiner Seite, ein kompaktes, wiedererkennbares Repertoire, eine individuelle Soundidee und gen�gend Ernst, um dar�ber den Humor im Detail nicht zu verlieren - vibes with attitude, auf der H�he der Zeit.
