Born in Haifa, Israel, singer Efrat Alony studied composition, arranging, jazz singing and classical singing in Israel, Germany and the U.S. and took additional lessons from the likes of Joe Lovano, Bob Brookmeyer and Steve Gray. Efrat was a featured soloist with many big bands such as the United Women’s Orchestra, the Sunday Night Orchestra (CD “Overcast”, 2008), the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), the Radio Big Band Frankfurt (HR-Bigband, upcoming CD) and the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. She was awarded the Jazz Performance Prize of the Karl Hofer Society (2006) and the City of Berlin Jazz Prize (2008).
Produced by her long-time musical partner, pianist Mark Reinke, in co-production with Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Radio), “Dismantling Dreams” is Efrat’s fourth album with her band project Alony. Now reduced to a three-person ensemble (plus string quartet), the band mixes acoustic and electronical elements into original sound designs that are strongly and deliberately influenced by current pop music concepts. Embedded in these adventurous soundscapes, Efrat Alony’s fascinating voice gains a new, fundamental clarity and an emotional deepness never reached before. This unique and artful form of singer-songwriting crosses stylistic borders effortlessly. “The compositions are like collages of feelings,” says Efrat, “like little films for the ear.”
Efrat Alony’s songs have been hailed by the press for years. Some call them “popular art songs, highly expressive,” others speak of “pop songs coming out of jazz in a mysterious way” or “a chamber-jazz parallel world.” Austrian Jazzzeit read: “Singer Efrat Alony not only has an interesting voice but is also a composer and lyricist with a message and a language of her own. Her songs are full of melody and yet not simple; they live.” And Bavarian Radio comments: “She is a musician of stubborn refinement. She loves the melting of jazz, rock and electronic elements and turns this sound into a very individual one -- due to her personal lyrics and warm alto voice.” “Dismantling Dreams” is further proof of an uninhibited, bewildering talent.

„Dismantling Dreams“, Efrats viertes Album mit ihrem Bandprojekt Alony, wurde zusammen mit dem Bayerischen Rundfunk von ihrem langjährigen Partner und Pianisten Mark Reinke produziert. Alony – nun reduziert zum Trio (plus Streichquartett) – mischen hier akustische und elektronische Elemente zu originellen Sounddesigns, die gezielt von aktuellen Konzepten der Popmusik beeinflusst sind. Eingebettet in diese abenteuerlichen Soundscapes gewinnt Efrats faszinierende Stimme eine neue, fundamentale Klarheit und eine emotionale Tiefe, die sie nie zuvor erreicht hat. Das ist Singer-Songwriter-Kunst von besonderer, grenzüberschreitender Art. „Die Kompositionen sind wie Gefühls-Collagen“, sagt Efrat, „wie kleine Ohrfilme.“
Efrat Alonys Songs werden seit Jahren von der Presse gefeiert. Die einen nennen sie „populäre Kunstlieder, hoch expressiv“, die anderen „auf geheimnisvolle Weise vom Jazz herkommende Popsongs“ oder gar eine „Kammerjazz-Parallelwelt“. In Jazzzeit war zu lesen: „Die Sängerin Efrat Alony hat nicht nur eine interessante Stimme, sondern ist auch eine Komponistin und Textdichterin, die etwas zu sagen und ihre eigene Sprache gefunden hat.“ Und beim Bayerischen Rundfunk kommentierte man: „Sie ist eine Musikerin von eigensinniger Raffinesse, liebt die Verschmelzung von Elementen aus Jazz, Rock und elektronischer Musik und verleiht diesem Sound mit persönlichen Texten und dunkler Altstimme ein großes Maß an Individualität.“ „Dismantling Dreams“ unterstreicht die verstörende, unbändige Freiheit einer großen Künstlerin.
