Born in 1982 near Bari in Southern Italy, Livio Minafra began studying the piano with Professor Francesco de Santis at age 10. In 2004 he graduated from the “Niccolò Piccinni” Conservatory in Bari after completing his studies and three years later also earned a diploma in jazz (with a thesis on Cecil Taylor). The son of jazz trumpeter Pino Minafra and excellent harpsichordist Margherita Porfido, Livio is a playing and composing member of several outstanding bands such as Sud Ensemble, Canto General, Municipale Balcanica and MinAfric Orchestra and has performed with them extensively in Italy, Germany, Japan, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Portugal and other countries. The Sud Ensemble won Música Jazz's "Top Jazz 2005" -- for the "best band" and the "best CD" (Terronia, ENJA Records) --, while Canto General was awarded for the "best CD in 2007" (Viva La Black, Ogun Records) by Música e dischi.
Livio Minafra's solo debut in 2003 ("La Dolcezza Del Grido”) received a lot of recognition worldwide. It was chosen among the top ten CDs of the year by www.jazzhouse.org as well as Greek Tzaz Magazine. Livio also won several awards as a pianist and composer and ranked high in new talent polls in Italy and Japan. Coda Magazine described him as a blending of Conlon Nancarrow and Mal Waldron and celebrated "the ferocious energy, fizzing humor and formal enchantment that inform Livio Minafra's astounding music." Cadence magazine finds his compositional sense unique: "Informed by all aspects of the jazz tradition, the lineage of Italian music, contemporary classical, and more, his wonderous imagination is full of color and rhythm, plus a maturely developed sense of humor. That he also possesses the chops to realize that vision to its fullest is icing on the cake."
On his new solo album "La Fiamma E Il Cristallo" (the flame & the crystal) Livio Minafra brings his personal art of piano performance some steps nearer to perfection. Starting off from melodies and harmonies that sometimes may resemble Debussy, Chopin, Paganini, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mediterranean folk tunes or even silent movie music, the pianist soon gets into improvised virtuoso flights of his free, jazz-inspired imagination. As Italian critic Fabrizio Ciccarelli puts it: "The 'academic' components are fragmented, decomposed in the light of a syntax that is strictly personal and anything but rational, characterized by dynamic and fertile inventiveness." In Livio Minafra's playing a fierce intelligence and an overwhelming technique open new spaces for improvised music with a thrilling rhythmic drive.

Livio ist der Sohn des Jazztrompeters Pino Minafra und der hervorragenden Cembalistin Margherita Porfido. Als Spieler und Komponist gehört er mehreren außergewöhnlichen Formationen an -- darunter Sud Ensemble, Canto General, Municipale Balcanica und MinAfric Orchestra -- und ist mit ihnen vielfach in Italien, Deutschland, Japan, Frankreich, Holland, Spanien, Österreich, Portugal und anderen Ländern aufgetreten. Das Sud Ensemble wurde 2005 vom Magazin "Musica Jazz" als "bestes Ensemble des Jahres" und für die "beste CD" (Terronia, ENJA Records) ausgezeichnet. Auch Canto General erhielt 2007 von "Musica e dischi" einen Preis für die "beste CD des Jahres" (Viva La Black, Ogun Rec.).
Livio Minafras Solo-Debütalbum "La Dolcezza Del Grido" sorgte 2003 für viel Aufsehen. Es wurde sowohl bei www.jazzhouse.org wie auch im griechischen Magazin "Tzaz" unter die 10 besten CDs des Jahres gewählt. Livio gewann außerdem verschiedene Preise als Pianist und Komponist und belegte vordere Plätze in Newcomer-Polls in Italien und Japan. Das Jazz Podium schwärmt von seiner sinfonischen Wucht, seinem drivenden Swing, seinem Humor und seiner Spielfreude: "Livio Minafra nutzt die Freiheit der spontanen Improvisation, um Bögen zu schlagen, vom Mittelalter bis zur Neuzeit, von der Folklore über die Klassik bis zum Avantgarde-Jazz, verbindet ohne Brüche freie Klänge mit der Harmonik alter Tänze." Auf seinem neuen Solo-Album "La Fiamma E Il Cristallo" (Die Flamme und der Kristall) bringt Livio Minafra seine persönliche Klavierkunst noch einige Schritte näher Richtung Perfektion. Er beginnt gerne mit Melodien und Harmonien, die zuweilen an Debussy, Chopin, Paganini, Rimsky-Korsakow, mediterrane Volksweisen oder auch Stummfilmmusik erinnern mögen, hebt dann aber ab zu improvisierten Virtuosenflügen einer freien, jazzinspirierten Fantasie. Oder wie der italienische Kritiker Fabrizio Ciccarelli schreibt: "Die 'akademischen' Bestandteile werden fragmentiert, de-komponiert im Licht einer Syntax, die sehr persönlich und keineswegs rational ist, geprägt von einer dynamischen und fruchtbaren Erfindungskraft." In Livio Minafras Spiel öffnen eine mutige Intelligenz und eine überwältigende Technik neue Räume für eine von packender Rhythmik getriebene improvisierte Musik.
