After academic studies in psychology, working in an advertising agency and running a dancing school, Belgian composer Myriam Alter at 36 returned to music, her first love. She studied with the likes of John Ruocco and Hein van de Geyn, formed her own jazz band in Belgium and subsequently recorded two albums as a pianist/leader. In 1997 she made her first international album, "Alter Ego", on which she fully concentrated on composing original music while leaving the musical performance to others. "Alter Ego" was considered "a candidate for the record of the year" by German magazine Jazz thing.
With her album "If" (ENJ-9451 2), released in 2002, Myriam Alter found her personal musical language that "truly expresses what I am and where I come from". An unmistakable amalgam of tango, classical, oriental and jazz elements, "If" was a big success among listeners for its melodic charms and tender feelings. The album received excellent ratings everywhere (Stereo: CD of the month, Stereoplay: Audiophile CD of the month). The Gazette read: "World music and jazz blend beautifully in this poetic CD, driven by the music of Belgian composer Myriam Alter. 10 originals that fuse her Judeo-Spanish background, with its Arabic influences and life-affirming Mediterranean spirit, and the sultry melancholy of Argentine tango in a jazzy framework. Alter's new album, "Where Is There", just starts off where "If" ended. "The most important thing when I fix a band is the general sound I want to get," says Myriam Alter. "This helps me to decide which instruments I want. Then I look for the best musicians to play my music." This time her choice was Jaques Morelenbaum, the great Brazilian cello player who so beautifully combines an authentic samba feeling with a chamber music's intimacy. A living legend in MPB, Morelenbaum has worked with such as Marisa Monte, Carlinhos Brown, Caetano Veloso, Egberto Gismonti and many others. His rich tone and improvisational talent, assisted by Ruocco's warm clarinet and Bonafede's tasteful piano voicings, generated an album that makes one's dreams fly away on Myriam Alter's heartfelt melodies and moving rhythms.
Nach einem Psychologie-Studium, der Arbeit in einer Werbeagentur und der Leitung eines Tanzstudios kehrte die belgische Komponistin Myriam Alter im Alter von 36 Jahren zur Musik zurück, ihrer ersten Liebe. Sie lernte bei John Ruocco, Hein van de Geyn und anderen, gründete ihre eigene Jazzband in Belgien und nahm als Pianistin und Bandleaderin zwei Platten auf. 1997 entstand ihr erstes internationales Album, "Alter Ego", auf dem sie sich erstmals ganz aufs Komponieren eigener Musik konzentrierte und die musikalische Ausführung anderen überließ. Das Magazin Jazz thing nannte "Alter Ego" "einen Kandidaten für die Platte des Jahres".
Mit "If" (ENJ-9451 2) fand Myriam Alter 2001 vollends zu ihrer persönlichen Musiksprache: "Das Album drückt wahrhaftig aus, was ich bin und wo ich herkomme", so Alter. Dieses unverwechselbare Amalgam aus Tango-, Klassik-, Orient- und Jazz-Elementen wurde dank seines melodischen Zaubers und seiner sanften Emotionen ein großer Erfolg und erhielt vorzügliche Kritiken (Stereo: CD des Monats, Stereoplay: Die Audiophile des Monats, The Gazette: Fünf Sterne). In Stereoplay war zu lesen: "Bei diesem Tonträger ist alles, aber auch wirklich alles vom Feinsten. Nach knapp 50 Minuten ist man von Myriam Alter restlos begeistert. Denn mit diesem Werk gibt sie dem Tango Nuevo neue Impulse."
Alters neues Album, "Where Is There", macht dort weiter, wo "If" aufhörte. "Das Wichtigste, bevor ich eine Band zusammenstelle, ist der Gesamtsound, den ich haben möchte", sagt Myriam Alter. "Er hilft mir bei der Entscheidung, welche Instrumente ich brauche. Dann suche ich nach den besten Musikern für meine Musik." Diesmal entschied sie sich für Jaques Morelenbaum, den großen brasilianischen Cellospieler, der so wunderbar das authentische Samba-Feeling mit kammermusikalischer Intimität verbindet. Die lebende Legende der MPB hat bereits mit Marisa Monte, Carlinhos Brown, Caetano Veloso, Egberto Gismonti und vielen anderen gearbeitet. Morelenbaums voller Ton und seine poetische Fantasie, unterstützt von Ruoccos warmer Klarinette und Bonafedes sensiblem Klavierspiel, haben ein Album hervorgebracht, das unsere Träume zum Fliegen bringt -- getragen von den seelenvollen Melodien und anregenden Rhythmen Myriam Alters.
