Composer, bandleader, and multi-reedist Matt Darriau showed his interest in musical influences outside the jazz world as early as 1986. His "Balkan Bounce" was the very first track on the very first album of Boston-based big band Orange Then Blue and can be seen as a precursor to much of his work since. A stunningly virtuosic and hot player, Darriau can swing with the best of them - as can be heard on recordings by his band Ballin' The Jack focussing on jazz from the '30s and '40s. However, traditional Balkan, klezmer, Celtic, and gypsy influences have always held an important place in Darriau's musical universe. He has performed in many adventurous contexts, including the widely popular Klezmatics, who imbue Yiddish roots music with a contemporary flavor, Celtic-influenced bands Whirligig and Smash The Windows, and the polystylistic Les Misérables Brass Band.
His New York-based Paradox Trio finds the reedman giving traditional folk material a contemporary improvisational spin, writing new tunes that mix old-world and modern influences, and displaying masterful soloing chops. Paradox Trio (actually a quartet), formed by Darriau in 1991, can be seen as a particularly influential group on the New York downtown scene. Darriau was in the first wave of artists to introduce Eastern European and Middle Eastern melodies, scales, and rhythms into the downtown mix. The band's drummer, Macedonian-born dumbek virtuoso Seido Salifoski, plays music from his gypsy lineage and Balkan traditions and has also performed with Bulgarian top musicians Ivo Papasov and Yuri Yanakov. Brad Shepik who recorded with Balkan-influenced bands such as Pachora, Dave Douglas' Tiny Bell Trio and his own ensembles, adds his angular guitar bursts to the band's style. Employing bass and cello techniques on his self-designed 5-string electric cello, Canadian-born Rufus Cappadocia is a much sought after improvisator in the downtown new music scene.
The New York Times read: "The Paradox Trio follows one klezmer trail back to the Balkans and the Middle East, where modal scales and odd meters are part of folk traditions. But the music is urban and American, a long way from traditionalism." Featuring Bulgarian jazz hero Theodosii Spassov as a special guest on kaval, an end-blown Bulgarian flute, their new album "Gambit" captures the Paradox Trio's ethnic-experimental downtown mix on a new level - sparkling with power and emotion.

Dieser verblüffend virtuose und mitreißende Bläser ist ein vollwertiger Jazz-Saxophonist und -Klarinettist: Das beweist er z.B. regelmäßig in seiner Band Ballin' the Jack, mit der er sich dem Jazz der 30er- und 40er-Jahre widmet. Doch daneben bilden traditionelle Balkan-, Klezmer-, Gypsy- und keltische Musik schon immer einen wichtigen Teil in Darriaus musikalischem Kosmos. Er ist u.a. Mitglied bei den beliebten Klezmatics, die "Yiddish roots" mit heutigen Zutaten spielen, in den keltisch beeinflussten Bands Whirligig und Smash the Windows und in der polystilistischen Les Misérables Brass Band.

Das Paradox Trio - eigentlich ein Quartett, 1991 begründet - wirkte prägend auf die Downtown-Jazz-Szene von New York, denn Darriau gehörte zur ersten Welle von Musikern, die osteuropäische und nahöstliche Melodien, Skalen und Rhythmen in den Downtown-Mix einbrachten. Der Drummer der Band, Seido Salifoski, in Mazedonien geboren, ist in den Gypsy- und Balkan-Traditionen zu Hause und trat u.a. mit den bulgarischen Meistern Ivo Papasov und Yuri Yanakov auf. Brad Shepik, auch mit anderen Balkan-gefärbten Jazzbands unterwegs (Dave Douglas' Tiny Bell Trio, Pachora, eigene Formationen), sorgt für die eckig-modernistischen Momente. Rufus Cappadocia, bekannt für seine experimentelle Technik auf dem selbst entwickelten 5-saitigen elektrischen Cello, gehört zu den gefragtesten Solisten auf der Downtown-Szene.
Die New York Times schreibt: "Das Paradox Trio verfolgt eine Klezmer-Spur zurück zum Balkan und in den Nahen Osten, wo modale Skalen und ungerade Metren Teil der Volkstradition sind. Doch ihre Musik ist urban und amerikanisch und weit vom Traditionalismus entfernt." Mit dem bulgarischen Jazz-Helden Theodosii Spassov als Special Guest am Kaval, der bulgarischen Hirtenflöte, erreicht das Paradox Trio auf dem (lang erwarteten) neuen Album "Gambit" einen neuen Level der Expressivität - sprühend vor Kraft und Emotion.
