Three masters of modern music decided to work in a trio format contributing their compositions and their virtuosity. As Peter Erskine puts it: "Making music in this particular trio setting is a constant joy, as well as an adventure in spontaneous composition... 'real-time architecture.' Michael and I have worked together in a number of contexts (e.g., the Bob Mintzer Big Band, my 'piano' trio, gigs with the late Don Grolnick, Mike Mainieri's American Diary band). I have always known him to be an irrepressible swinger, but I now know him as an uncompromising modernist. Which is part of what I've always admired about Marty... we first played together in Don Grolnick's band. I now appreciate Marty's complete sense of lyrical invention as well as his swing."
A band of three band leaders, Relativity explores the wide field of today's jazz going inside and outside of the tradition. Multi-instrumentalist Marty Ehrlich, one of the strongest voices in New York's Downtown scene, has long been admired for his individual sound and playing concept. Besides his own recordings, he was also featured by such as George Russell, Anthony Braxton, Butch Morris, John Zorn, Bobby Previte, and the New York Composers Orchestra. A much-admired bass player and a visionary composer, Michael Formanek accompanied such mainstream celebrities as Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, and Gerry Mulligan. Drummer Peter Erskine is known for his extraordinary sense for adventure as well as his stylistic confidence. He has been the drummer of choice for musicians as diverse as Jan Garbarek, Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Hubert Laws, Mike Stern, and the band Weather Report. In this trio, three open-minded artists join in a highly individual and compelling masterpiece.
