Ray Anderson, Mark Helias and Gerry Hemingway are long-time friends and cooperators who started working as a trio some 20 years ago. Over the years, they performed and recorded under the name of Oahspe, as the Ray Anderson Trio, as a collective and finally as BassDrumBone. After several records in the eighties "Hence the Reason" is their first recorded reunion in the nineties. More than ever, BassDrumBone stands for funky grooves, witty heads, free-wheeling improvisation, and a lot of fun.
Having started their careers in the seventies, all three of the players are well represented in the ENJA catalog. Gerry Hemingway who is one of the outstanding and most versatile drummers on the scene, was a member of Anthony Braxton's quartet for many years and has several CDs out with his own band. Bass player Mark Helias (who recorded with such as Dewey Redman, Ed Blackwell and Don Cherry) has been a bandleader in his own right with five excellent projects recorded for ENJA. He has also been co-leader of the proto-funk band Slickaphonics (together with Ray Anderson) and co-producer of Anderson's Alligatory Band. The horn player in the band, trombonist Ray Anderson, is considered one of the all-time masters on his instrument and had a lot of success lately with his exuberant Alligatory Band. Anderson has always been a player sparkling with wit and originality, as jazz critic Art Lange wrote back in the eighties: "He can laze a loose-limbed legato line with the insouciance of a Vic Dickenson or provide locomotive tailgaiting with the urgency of a Kid Ory, delve into deft vocalization with the fluency of a Mangelsdorff, bend notes bluesily a la Lawrence Brown, or offer a sense of humor amid stuttering articulation reminiscent of Dicky Wells." Add this trio's free-spirited interaction, and you know what to expect from BassDrumBone!
