Recorded by David Baker in New York City, March 1982.
Drummer Jim Payne met trombonist Ray Anderson at a jam session in a 6th floor loft on the corner on 7th Avenue and 52nd Street in New York City. That was in 1980. Later that year he met bassist Mark Helias while sitting outside Sweet Basil, a small club in the West Village, on a hot August night. There followed a series of "funk night" sessions at Jim's small Times Square apartment. Guitarist Allan Jaffe, who had worked with Mark in New Haven, Connecticut, was recruited along with saxophonist Steve Elson.
As the sessions intensified, they started bringing in original music, and so began SLICKAPHONICS. After many years of recording and touring individually with some of the top names in R&B, funk and jazz, these musicians decided to pool their talents and form their own, original, cooperative band. Their music has a high level of precision and is not without a sense of humour. The solos are fiery, the vocals are energetic, the collective improvisation is fierce, and the groove is exciting!
SLICKAPHONICS make the people dance!
